Vitamin D
Lifestyle changes in industrialized countries has caused insufficient intake of vitamin D due to dietary changes, an increased use of sunblockers, and decreased outdoor activities.
Diminished serum vitamin D levels has been associated with an increased risk of asthma and wheezy disorders, which is supported by unpublished results from the COPSAC2000 birth cohort.
We are currently conducting a randomized double-blind clinical trial assigning pregnant women to either 60µg vitamin D (2400 IU) per day or matching placebo from week 24 of gestation till delivery. Their offspring are followed till age 3 years for development of atopic diseases.
Pregnant women taking >15µg vitamin D prestudy and women with heart, kidney, metabolic disorders or DM are excluded from the study.
The vitamin D RCT is monitored by the Copenhagen GCP-unit.
